Although not directly related to fly fishing, WFN: World Fishing Network, North America's only 24-hour fishing lifestyle network, announced that more than a dozen celebrity anglers and TV fishing personalities, including MLB legend Mike Schmidt, have recorded promotional spots encouraging consumers to donate to the WFN Gulf Oil Spill Fisherman's Fund. The spots will begin airing on WFN and WFN HD on June 30, 2010 as part of the Network's 24-hour fundraiser to support fishing communities devastated by the Gulf oil spill.
In addition to personal pleas from anglers and commercial fishermen, the following celebrity anglers and TV fishing personalities are encouraging viewers to donate to the WFN Gulf Oil Spill Fisherman's Fund: MLB Hall of Famer and passionate angler Mike Schmidt; Dave Mercer (Host, Facts of Fishing); Henry Waszczuk (Host, Fishing the Flats); Colin McKeown (Host, The New Fly Fisher); Joe Mercurio (Host of PTTS); Jarrett Edwards (Host, Jarrett Edwards Outdoors); Mariko Izumi (Host, Hookin' Up); Mark Melnyk (Host, Reel Fishy Jobs); Mike D (Host, Lunkerville); Italo Labignan (Host, Canadian Sportfishing); and professional anglers Scott Martin & Roland Martin.
On June 30, the entire day of programming and commercial airtime will support recreational anglers, commercial anglers and environmental groups affected by the Gulf oil spill disaster. These PSA's will run in lieu of commercials throughout the day and will direct viewers to donate to the WFN Gulf Oil Spill Fisherman's Fund (www.wfn.tv/donate), which supports the FishAmerica Foundation's Gulf Fund in support of Gulf Coast restoration efforts, and the Venice Charter Boat and Guide Association - a group created to protect the interests of charter boat captains after the crisis is over.
Co-hosted by WFN News anchor Jim Van Horne and Emmanuel Belliveau, host of WFN Green, the program will report from the fishing areas most impacted by the spill. The show will also tell the stories of those charter captains, guides and anglers most impacted by the disaster, plus the short-term and long-term clean-up efforts. WFN News will continue its coverage with news reports from the Gulf throughout the summer.
"We commend these passionate anglers for stepping up to support our campaign," said Mark Rubinstein, President & CEO of WFN. "We hope this informative 30-minute special, pleas from well-known anglers and our continuing coverage will inspire viewers to help by donating to the WFN Gulf Oil Spill Fisherman's Fund."
In support of WFN's efforts, DISH Network, Charter Communications and AT&T U-verse have already agreed to make WFN available to subscribers for the one-day fundraiser. Charter Communications will be making WFN available to its digital customers in various Charter service areas. AT&T U-verse will have a WFN free-view available for all U-verse TV HD subscribers June 28 through June 30 to help support affected anglers.
The special is also available to WFN subscribers on Comcast, Verizon, Knology and GVTC. Please check www.wfn.tv/demand for specific channel information.
WFN also provides comprehensive information with a special website at www.wfn.tv/gulf dedicated to covering the crisis from a fishing perspective. Also included on the site is a timeline of events, video of news stories, articles from WFN Ambassadors in the area and more.
