This month the No Child Left Inside Act (H.R. 2054 / S. 866) added several new co-sponsors in the House blowing past the coalition's goal of 100. The bill currently has 123 sponsors, including lead sponsor Congressman John Sarbanes of Maryland. The list of co-sponsors is comprised of both Democrats and Republicans and nearly every Democrat on the critical Education and Labor Committee. In addition, nearly 1/5 of the Senate is co-sponsoring the bill, with several key Members of the Senate education committee including lead sponsor Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island.
As the House and Senate Committees continue to hold hearings and work on legislation to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, momentum is clearly building for this key environmental education bill. The No Child Left Inside (NCLI) Act supports environmental and outdoor education in our nation's pre-K through 12 public schools. It provides incentives for states to create and implement State Environmental Literacy Plans to ensure that students have a basic understanding of the environment before they graduate.
